New York Yankees Shopping Marcus Stroman

The New York Yankees have been active this offseason, acquiring Max Fried via free agency, Devin Williams via trade, Cody Bellinger via trade, and Paul Goldschmidt via free agency. It appears the club may not be done making moves, with USA Today’s Bob Nightengale reporting that the Yankees are looking for ways to get RHP Marcus Stroman’s contract off the books.

Stroman, 33, inked a two-year, $37M contract with the Yankees last offseason. The deal included a conditional player option for 2026. In 2024, Stroman pitched to a 9-10 record with a 4.31 ERA and 113 strikeouts in 154.2 innings across 30 appearances. He made zero appearances in the postseason. With a group of Fried, Gerrit Cole, Luis Gil, Carlos Rodon, and Clarke Schmidt solidified, Stroman has become the odd man out in the Yankees’ rotation.

Yankees Willing to Eat Salary

A recent report from Jon Heyman revealed the Yankees are willing to eat some of Stroman’s $18M salary to get a deal done. The right-hander’s conditional 2026 player option only increases the pressure on New York’s end. If he pitches at least 140 innings in 2025, he’ll unlock an option worth $18M. Furthermore, shedding Stroman’s contract will drop the Yankees down a luxury tax threshold.

A change of scenery may benefit Stroman, who notably struggled at Yankee Stadium last season. He recorded a 5.31 ERA in home games and a 3.09 ERA in road games.
