Never Forget: Colin Cowherd Took Credit For Convincing The 49ers To Draft Trey Lance

Trey Lance is the odd man out in San Francisco. Sam Darnold has been named the backup quarterback with the 49ers and Lance’s place on the roster continues to look murkier by the day. If you have watched this preseason, it’s painfully obvious that Lance just isn’t an NFL-caliber quarterback. Not even close. I just want to make sure we also remember the fact that Colin Cowherd took credit for convincing the 49ers to draft Lance.

PFT had this story back in 2021. We know how these stories go. You can’t really get a straight answer in there but Cowherd’s PR team certainly painted the impression that he had something to do with the selection. It’s pretty well-known at this point that Kyle Shanahan wanted Mac Jones and got talked out of it by John Lynch. Cowherd and Lynch also worked together at Fox prior to Lynch getting the job in San Francisco.

Cowherd’s daughter was also dating Lance, which made this story even weirder. Regardless of whether Cowherd’s opinion actually mattered in the selection, he wanted you to know that the 49ers were doing the right thing when they picked Lance.

The decision to trade up for Trey Lance is arguably the worst trade in NFL history. I don’t think that’s even being hyperbolic. The decision to trade up for Lance legitimately may have cost the 49ers a Super Bowl.

That 2021 NFL Draft was loaded. You literally couldn’t go wrong. San Francisco could have just stayed at 12 and taken Micah Parsons. Think about how that stings. That’s the exact spot Parsons went. The exact pick San Francisco had prior to the trade. San Francisco also wouldn’t have had to move up for Mac Jones. He was selected by New England 15th overall.

Other players selected in that draft include Kyle Pitts, Ja’Marr Chase, Jaylen Waddle, Penei Sewell, Jaycee Horn, and Patrick Surtain. You literally couldn’t miss if you made a pick that night that wasn’t a quarterback.

Hindsight is 2020. I’ll be the first to admit that I didn’t give the 49ers a failing grade for their draft. However, if you read what I said, my semi-high rating came solely on the fact that San Francisco would have been the hardest place for Lance to fail. Shanahan went undefeated with Brock Purdy. Imagine how bad the guy sucks if Shanahan couldn’t figure out what to do with the guy.

The truth of the matter is, that Lance was always a risk. I referred to Lance as I do with all the shaky quarterback prospects. The guy was a total wildcard. Nothing more and nothing less. It was almost impossible to scout Lance given the fact that he didn’t have any starts and his final year was ruined by COVID. It was also FCS North Dakota State tape too.

If you read my quarterback rankings that year, I tried to make it as obvious as possible that Justin Fields was the QB2 in that draft. As we sit here today, I think we can all agree that Fields is the second-best quarterback in that class behind Trevor Lawrence. Zach Wilson looks like a bust too and Mac Jones is above average. If you were going to trade up for a quarterback, it had to be Fields. Guess how that has shaken out?

Imagine if the 49ers listened to me and took Fields? Now that would be fun!

The 49ers are now suffering the consequences of that decision while Cowherd gets paid millions of dollars a year to be uneducated and not accountable. Did you see yesterday that Cowherd literally thought the Seahawks were in the AFC? Not a joke.

Never forget, the Trey Lance trade will go down as one of the worst trades in NFL history. Colin Cowherd was in favor of it and will continue to sit here and never mention it. He also mocked Tua Tagovailoa (the team that traded with San Francisco) over and over again and the Dolphins quarterback just led the league in yards per attempt.

People need to understand this about Cowherd. He’s a hypocrite, totally uneducated, and knows literally nothing about sports. Let’s make sure we never forget this moment in history. The clown at Fox Sports continues to make a fool out of himself over and over again.

I pity the fool if I ever get a chance to debate him. I really think we need to rally the people and get the hashtag #gettreyontheherd going again.
