Netflix Hires ‘Dune’ and ‘Dr. Strange’ Writer Jon Spaihts for ‘Gears of War’ Film
The quality of a video game movie or show can vary wildly. The Last of Us shows how great adaptations of games can be. Uncharted showed us how mixed they can be. And Paramount Plus’ Halo showed us how terrible they can be. But despite the mixed results, Netflix is trying to ensure it’s upcoming Gears of War movie will be a success. The hiring of Jon Spaihts is what Netflix hopes will be the first step.
Previous Successes:
According to Variety Magazine, Spaihts’ was picked up by Netflix due to his work on films like Dune and Dr. Strange. The former having won several Oscars while the latter was a great film in it’s own right. Spaihts’ credentials will no doubt be a blessing for the project. Though how that project will turn out is still to be seen.
Adapting an Icon of Gaming:
The Gears of War saga is considered one of the best in gaming. A wonderful series of games that changed the FPS genre forever. Clearly, Netflix has a lot to tackle in trying to make this film adaptation work. And the consequences for screwing it up could be dire.
Netflix’s acquisition of Spaihts will get the project started off on the right track, but it doesn’t take much for a film or TV show to be derailed. And even with a star cast, great director, producers and writers, a project can still flop.
But with Spaihts’ track record it doesn’t seem likely that a Gears of War movie will crash and burn. But that isn’t a guarantee. Only time can tell if this is the start of something great, or the only good part of a crappy piece of work.
