Stop bringing your bags to the gym and plopping them on the floor. It’s rude and unnecessary. You also don’t look cool. (Caleigh Waldman)

Is It Necessary To Bring Big Ass Bags To The Gym?

I hope everyone is enjoying my gym chronicles. I lifted in dirty basements my whole life, so I continue to be dumbfounded by the things that go on in public gyms. Here’s chapter whatever: Is it necessary to bring big ass bags to the gym?

I just don’t get it, man. You would swear you’re walking through airport security sometimes bobbing and weaving through suitcases. This is not just a one-day thing. It’s an everyday thing. A good forty percent of the people working out just plop big backpacks or bags right on the floor. How fucking rude?

A: What are you doing?

You don’t earn extra points because you’re carrying a bag with you to work out. It’s like the guy who wears sunglasses inside. You know you don’t have to do that, right? Seriously, what do you got in there? Sex toys, condoms, drones, confetti? Put that shit away.

B: Rude.

Dude, it’s a public gym. You’re not the only one in there. I shouldn’t feel like I’m playing a game of twister in there. Put your weights away and keep your bag in a locker. I think we should insert a new rule. You want to just drop your bags anywhere on the gym floor that you please? Fine, but we’re also allowed to kick it at any time if it’s remotely in our way. Deal?

C: Why?

You don’t need to bring a bag to the gym. I don’t care who you are. You’re coming straight from work, fine. I get it a little, but change in the dressing room and leave that shit in a locker. Other than that, WTF are you doing?

Here is what I bring with me to the gym:

  • Drink
  • Pen
  • Paper

My little pen and paper go right in my pocket and don’t leave any clutter on the floor. You actually want to look cool at the gym? Write your weights down. Otherwise, you’re kinda wasting your time. The goal is to get stronger. You’re not really getting stronger unless you’re jotting your weights down and trying to beat them the following week.

One percent of the people bring some sort of a journal with them. A large number bring bags to make themselves look cool. You tell me which one is wasting their time and which one is in there putting in work…

I’m not a bring rules guy. Outside of making it illegal with jail time for truck drivers in the left lane, I usually don’t find it necessary to make rules on the fly. However, I think gyms should start enforcing the “stop being a rude asshole and leaving your suitcase on the gym floor” rule. End of blog.
