NCAA Wrestling Round One Recap
The NCAA wrestling tournament is going down in St. Louis and the tournament is already full of upsets. They split the first round into two sessions to keep wrestlers and coaches safe. I broke down the lightweights here and it was full of upsets. The bigger guys got their chance a few hours later and they did not disappoint at all.
165 Pound Weight Class
This weight went pretty much to seed but we almost had the biggest upset of the tournament in round one of this weight. The 3 seed Jake Wentzel from Pitt won 1-0 over Evan Barczak from Drexel. Barczak had a takedown that ended up being overturned and allowed Wentzel to skate by in the first round.
Kennedy Monday from North Carolina also almost pulled off a first-round upset. He took the lead early on 11th seeded Cameron Amine from Michigan but ultimately lost in overtime.
174 Pound Weight Class
The match I told you to keep an eye on in my 174-pound preview was the best first-round match at this weight. Jake Logan from Lehigh was tied 4-4 with the number two seeded Demetrius Romero. Romero ended up winning but it was a close call for the Utah Valley wrestler.
184 Pound Weight Class
Charles Small from Hofstra won his first-round match over Tate Samuelson from Wyoming. Small is the 23 seed and defeated the 10th seeded wrestler 3-2.
David Key, the 20 seed from Navy pinned the 13th seed, Chris Weiler, from Wisconsin. Lou Deprez the three seed had a close call in round one, but the guy who I picked to win it all scraped by in the first round.
197 Pound Weight Class
Easily the biggest upset thus far in the tournament came at the 197 pound weight class. The two seed Eric Schultz from Nebraska got pinned in the opening round by Owen Pentz the 31 seed from North Dakota State.
This weight also had one of the all-time first-round bouts, Nick Reenan from North Carolina State had Jacob Warner from Iowa on his back and was about to pin the Hawkeye. Warner ultimately fought off his back and tied the match up late in the third period on a stall point and a takedown. Warner won in sudden victory overtime to advance to round two.
285 Pound Weight Class
Tate Orndorff from Ohio State upset Christian Lance from Nebraska in the first round. The 21st seeded Buckeye beat the Big Ten foe, the 12 seed.
Matt Stencel had a close call in the first round as well, he was put to his back by Joe Doyle the 30th seeded heavy weight Stencel fought off his back and ended up pinning Doyle and moving onto round 2.
TL//DR: NCAA wrestling round one recap for the heavyweights. The upsets continue to happen as the tournament concluded the first round of action.
