NCAA Wrestling Round 1 Recap
The NCAA wrestling tournament is here! Round 1 was split into two groups for safety reasons, lightweights and heavier weights. The first five weights from 125 – 157 had some great matches already, and some of the top seeds already went down.
125 Pound Weight Class
The 125 pound weight class started with a bang, Malik Heinselman from Ohio State, the ten seed lost to Robert Howard from Penn State. Howard lost the two previous matches to the Buckeye this year, but won when it counted.
Sam Latona, the two seed had an early scare as well, he was down 6-5 in the second period to Jonathan Tropea from Rider. He wound up winning the match 12-7, but it shows that the second guy at the weight is vulnerable
133 Pound Weight Class
The 22 seed, Mario Guillen from Ohio also advanced in the next round defeating the 11 seed Anthony Madigral from Oklahoma. The rest of 133 went to seed pretty much with Roman Bravo-Young winning by technical fall in the opening round.
141 Pound Weight Class
Ian Parker from Northern Iowa was upset in the first round. The seven seed lost to Colin Valdiviez from Northwestern. Parker has a long way to battle back to become an All-American.
Real Woods from Stanford who was a late entry to the tournament after earning a wildcard berth won his first round, which was also an upset in the bracket. He beat Grant Willits from Oregon State, the 12 seed.
149 Pound Weight Class
This weight went pretty much as seeded, the 10th seeded wrestler from Rutgers Mike Van Brill went down to Triston Lara from Northern Iowa, Sammy Sasso won by fall as he looks to become a national champion this year.
157 Pound Weight Class
The last weight class of the first session had some great matches, with only one upset via seeding standards. Jarrett Jacques from Mizzou lost as the 10 seed to Jacob Wright from Wyoming.
TL//DR: NCAA Wrestling Round 1 Recap. Seeding is already out the door with upsets at every weight thus far.
