NCAA Wrestling Championships 174 Preview

The NCAA wrestling championships are almost here! I have been breaking down all the weights at the tournament for Vendetta. Here is the preview for the 174-pound weight class. I broke down the 125133141149, 157, and the 165-pound weight class.

The Story

Michael Kemerer from Iowa is the top seeded wrestler. He has been around for what seems like forever with injuries and the extra year of eligibility. His presence in the Hawkeye lineup is something the team will miss, but this is his chance at brining home a national championship.

The two seed is Demetrius Romero from Utah Valley. In the 2018-2019 season, he won the Big 12, making him the first in the program’s history. He is 16-0 this season and looking to remain undefeated in the NCAA championships.

Carter Starocci from Penn State is only a freshman, but earned the three seed at the tournament this season and is a force to be reckoned with. In his redshirt season 2019-2020, he won the Southern Scuffle, one of the most prestigious in-season tournaments.

Dark Horse(s)

Kaleb Romero from Ohio State is the seven seed and has one of the best chances to upset some people to make a deep run. Being on the same side of the bracket as Romero is an advantage I think because with most competition being within your own conference, The Big Ten is better all around.

Daniel Bullard from North Carolina State is another guy who can make some noise. The eight seed representing the Wolfpack isn’t necessarily going to make the finals, but he can make a run for bronze.

Best First Round Match

Jake Logan from Lehigh is a certified stud. The New York native didn’t give up a takedown in his final two high school seasons. He gets a tough draw against Romero in round 1, but he is someone who is relentless and can score a ton of points.

Prediction

The shortened season with a lack of matches and opportunities to wrestle other top-level matches makes the seeding and matchups unpredictable. I truly think the all Big Ten season Starocci wrestled gives him an advantage over Romero. Michael Kemerer is a stud and the years of his experience and familiarity with the NCAA tournament will get him to the finals. I got Kemerer over Starocci in the finals.

TL//DR: NCAA wrestling 174 pound preview. Michael Kemerer and Carter Starocci are the guys to beat.
