NBA MVP Award: No One Knows What It Means Anymore

NBA MVP

NBA MVP
USA TODAY Sports / Alonzo Adams

No one has any idea what the NBA MVP award means anymore. It is wildly inconsistent on who wins and its meaning. Do we know that the V in MVP stands for VALUABLE?! I mean there are instances when the NBA got it right. The most valuable person to their team, combined with success, won. Those are the years I am happy about, even if it is close, I’m good with that. Instances like Giannis Antekounmpo last year, 2017 when Russell Westbrook won, Lebron James before 2011, and Steve Nash in 05 and 06. I love these decisions, these were all good in terms of being valuable yet that team still had major success.

Then, there are other times when the MVP award wasn’t who was the most valuable and still had success, but rather it is the best season award. Steph Curry should not have won MVP the years he did, not a unanimous one at that. I don’t think Lebron should have won in his Miami years either. Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh were heavily involved in that team’s success too.

There are years when stats didn’t tell the whole story but they won NBA MVP because of how valuable they were. An example of that is one I put above, Steve Nash. Steve Nash’s stats weren’t the best in the league, but he was so important to his team you could see it every time he played. But people are bothered because Kobe Bryant had way better stats than he did, but Steve Nash’s value to his team was much more than Kobe’s value because Kobe had a way better team. I am a huge Kobe fan and I think this. They need to add the best season award or change the name of NBA MVP to best season award. No, it’s not as flashy but I am tired of trying to figure out how they will vote year after year.

I’ve said already that Lebron James, Anthony Davis, Kawhi Leonard, and James Harden should not win this year because they have amazing talent on their team. Lebron and AD have each other, Kawhi has Paul George, James Harden has Russell Westbrook. How is that valuable? Right now, I’d say Giannis, Nikola Jokic, and Luka Doncic should be the MVP finalists. They have the stats, the success, and their value to their team. This is just my rant. Fix the name or add another award, I am tired of the ambiguity.
