Longtime NBA insider Adrian Wojnarowski announced Wednesday that he is retiring from ESPN and the news industry after over three decades in sports media.
Here is an excerpt of Wojnarowski’s press release statement:
“I grew up the son of a factory worker two miles from ESPN’s campus and only ever dreamed of making a living as a sportswriter,” Wojnarowski’s release read. “Thirty-seven years ago, the Hartford Courant gave me my first byline and I never stopped chasing the thrill of it all.
“This craft transformed my life, but I’ve decided to retire from ESPN and the news industry. I understand the commitment required in my role and it’s an investment that I’m no longer driven to make. Time isn’t in endless supply and I want to spend mine in ways that are more personally meaningful.
“I leave with overwhelming gratitude for countless mentors and colleagues, subjects and stories, readers and viewers. no one has benefitted more than me from the belief, trust and generosity of others.”
As a result of his departure, according to multiple former colleagues, Wojnarowski has agreed to become the general manager of the men’s basketball program at St. Bonaventure, his alma mater. According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, that will include “Name, Image and Likeness allocation, recruiting and supporting successful Bonnies coach Mark Schmidt.”
Wojnarowski was universally regarded as the biggest name in the news-breaking industry for basketball. His biggest breakers were labeled “Woj Bombs,” changing the journalism and news-breaking industries operated not only across sports, but across news entirely.
We don’t often think about how draining news-breaking is–especially when you’re at the top of your field. You don’t sleep, you’re constantly on your phone and you oftentimes can’t engage with the world around you, in myriad ways, that a normal citizen might.
Credit to Wojnarowski for making a life-changing decision on his own merit–after all, he’s a legend in the sports media industry, regardless of how you feel about some of his antics (i.e. spoiling draft night picks).
