We are now through two weeks of the 2024 NFL season! What are our overreactions after the second weekend of action? Let’s dive into what our staff has to say below!
Bucs are legit.
Everyone will go crazy over the Saints after what they did, but I still believe and have believed Tampa remain the favorites. As people are finding out, the Bucs will be just fine without Dave Canales. Turns out Liam Coen might even be an upgrade. Bucky Irving’s pick is a hit. Baker Mayfield looks confident again, and it’s hard not to be when you have Tristan Wirfs and Mike Evans on your side.
The Steelers should go ahead and extend Justin Fields.
Is he lighting the world up with his passing? No. However, a 69.8 percent completion percentage through two games with no turnovers is major progress from last season. This team is clearly run-heavy, for better or worse, and it appears he is the appropriate guy to lead this offense. Extend him now before the price goes up.
The NFC East has taken a step back.
I don’t think Philly or Dallas can really be taken seriously as a top dog in the conference until further notice. The Saints came in and embarrassed the Cowboys on their own field. Meanwhile, Philly let that primetime game slip out of their fingers against Atlanta in really bad fashion. The Eagles team that made the Super Bowl two years ago would not have lost that. Even without Christian McCaffrey, I think San Fran is the top dog and Detroit still can’t be slept on.
I think the Chargers are back.
The Justin Herbert-Jim Harbaugh duo are off to a great start and I think they are firmly in the mix for a playoff spot. That Steelers defense is a great test in Week 3 before facing off against Kansas City in Week 4 to see if they can actually compete for the division. JK Dobbins looks like a new man in LA while Quentin Johnston may actually have a pulse in this offense. At the end of the day, it all comes down to Herbert and whether he can stay healthy.
The Raiders’ defense is a top-10 defense.
It held its own against the Chargers until running out of gas in the 4th quarter, then contained the Ravens. They have a bunch of dawgs that play their heart. The talent may be lacking but Patrick Graham has guys in the right spot and they can play with any offense in the league.
Current quarterback play is very poor.
Watching the quarterback play to begin the season has been brutal. I’m not sure how much of it is attributed to not having much of a preseason anymore, but nearly half the NFL’s starting quarterbacks have a QBR below 50. Only a select handful–Derek Carr, Kyler Murray, Josh Allen, Sam Darnold and Baker Mayfield, etc.–have really stood out over the first two weeks. I expect it to get better, but it’s been rough through two weeks–while running the ball has looked like a far more efficient type of offense (against light fronts).
Is it possible for the Giants and Panthers to be relegated?
The Giants, without a backup kicker (again), lost to a Commanders team that scored 21 points just off of field goals. The Panthers are the Panthers. That speaks for itself.
