WWE is set to merge with Endevor Group Holdings, Inc., and many current employees are worried about how secure their jobs are.
Despite being the biggest wrestling promotion since the late 1980s, Vince McMahon shockingly decided to sell WWE this year. Many believed he’d keep it in the McMahon family and potentially allow his son Shane McMahon or his daughter Stephanie to take over. While the move in itself is shocking enough, according to reports, many backstage employees are anxious about their futures in the promotion.
According to PWInsiderElite (subscription required), many WWE employees believe massive layoffs will follow the merger. Those in the travel, accounting and office roles not directly associated with wrestling believe they are expendable. Allegedly, these employees are already looking for other work opportunities.
It is believed that the deal will be finalized in the final half of 2023, most likely next month, in September. Wrestling Observer reported that Endeavor plans to revitalize WWE NXT, in order to make it a viable brand. While NXT began as a gameshow, it eventually took off as a developmental brand.
Triple H is best known for his lengthy tenure as a pro wrestler, but the retired veteran has since become a force to be reckoned with backstage. Currently, he manages WWE’s Creative Department and is responsible for the on-screen storylines. According to an SEC filing, once the merger goes through he will no longer be on the Board of Directors.
It’s likely that many employees became anxious after Triple H’s position became affected by the merger. While he will continue his roles backstage, the concerned employees likely believe they are far more expendable than the veteran. Only time will tell if WWE will have mass layoffs or not. The promotion notably fired scores of talent between 2020 and 2021, which means they might be ready and able to do the same on the corporate side.
