Micah Shrewsberry hired as head coach of Notre Dame

Notre Dame basketball is back! The Fighting Irish have finalized a deal to make the former Penn State head coach, Micah Shrewsberry, their new head coach, according to ESPN’s Pete Thamel.

Shrewsberry lead the Penn State Nittany Lions to an impressive bounce-back season in 2022-23. After a 10-10 record in conference play this season, Shrewsberry and the Nittany Lions needed to make a move during the postseason.

That’s exactly what they did. Penn State needed a miracle to enter the NCAA tournament. With three momentum-gaining wins in the Big Ten tournament, they found themselves in the championship. Penn State would lose in the championship bout versus Purdue by two points, but that run was enough to punch their ticket to March Madness.

Shrewsberry and Penn State torched the Texas A&M Aggies in a 76-59 victory in the opening round, but eventually fell to No. 2 seed Texas, 71-66, who advanced to its first Sweet 16 since 2008.

After two seasons with the Nittany Lions, Shrewsberry has signed a seven-year deal with the Fighting Irish. According to CBS Sports’ Matt Norlander, Shrewsberry has been the top target for Notre Dame for two weeks now. But, talks weren’t able to be held until Penn State got eliminated from the NCAA tournament. So, as much as it pains for a loss in March Madness, it has some silver lining for Shrewsberry.

Hopefully, Shrewsberry can turn around this Notre Dame program as they haven’t been as dynamic in previous seasons. The Fighting Irish finished second-to-last in the ACC with a 3-17 conference record and 11-21 overall record.
