Ryan Lavarnway is retiring from MLB. How will the former big league catcher be remembered over his ten year career? (Kim Klement-USA TODAY Sports)

Ryan Lavarnway Retires From MLB

Ryan Lavarnway is hanging up the cleats. It looks like he knows what he’s going to do post retirement as well but we’ll get to that eventually. The long time catcher is finally calling it quits after ten long years at the big league level. For a former 6th round pick, not a bad outcome!

Speaking of that we’ll get to it part, it would appear that Lavarnway is teasing his way towards a media career. Lavarnway, in fact, dropped his retirement piece on The Athletic. He also seems to be involved with MLB Trade Rumors. Lavarnway plans to have an open chat with fans on their platform that can be seen as part of their post.

Can I just go on a side tangent quick? Why would you post your retirement blog on a site that is behind a paywall? Does he get the part that nobody is going to read that? The Athletic is bankrupt and failing. Why do that to yourself? Especially on a headline everyone already knows without reading it? Just so stupid.

Okay, back to Lavarnway’s career to round things out. The former Red Sox draft pick spent time in Boston, Baltimore, Atlanta, Oakland, Pittsburgh, Cincinnati, Miami, and Cleveland. Lavarnway also suited up twice for Isreal in the World Baseball Classic. He even has a World Series ring after being part of the 2013 Red Sox team in limited fashion.

It’s the end of the road for Ryan Lavarnway. He never became an MLB regular but will still be remembered in my eyes as one of those grinder catches that came through the Red Sox system. It appears the media is his next route but that part remains to be seen.

Lavarnway, 35, finishes his big league career as a -1.2 WAR player sporting a batting line of .217/.272/.345 with nine career home runs.
