Tobin Anderson signs a five-year deal to coach for the Iona Gaels
After a historic victory over Purdue in the 2023 NCAA tournament, former FDU head coach Tobin Anderson signs a five-year deal with Iona. Via Pete Thamel.
FDU came into the tournament being selected into the first four. With a dominating 84-61 win over Texas Southern, the FDU knights officially entered into the round of 64. Then coach Anderson ignited his team into thinking they could beat the number one seed Purdue Boilermakers. Behind sheer heart, coaching, and grit, the Knights beat the Boilermakers in a 63-58 thriller. This cemented the FDU Knights as one of two teams in March Madness history to upset a number one seed as a 16 seeded team. After this win, Anderson gained star attention in the college basketball world, leading him to this deal.
Anderson is signing a five-year deal to become the head coach for Iona’s men’s basketball. He has been coaching for 22 years. Before FDU, Anderson coached at St. Thomas Aquinas, which is located near one of Iona’s campuses. Tobin led the Spartans to a very impressive record of 209-62. He won five ECC regular seasons and six tournament titles. He also became a four-time ECC coach of the year in 2015, 2016, 2021, and 2022. Anderson also gained the award of Metropolitan Basketball Writers Association Division II Coach of the Year five times (2015, 2016, 2017, 2021, and 2022).
Anderson will look to continue to excel with the Iona Gaels next season as they finished off with a 27-8 record. Before Anderson stepped into the job, legendary head coach Rick Pitino was in command of the Gaels from 2020 to 2023.
