Mekhi Becton Is A Perfect Example Of Why Bad Teams Stay Bad

Did anybody see Mekhi Becton out there pancaking people during the most recent playoff game? If you haven’t, you’re welcome. The over/under for how many times you watch this video is 1.5. Comment if you watched it a second or third time (I don’t blame you)

Becton, 25, was a trash tackle with the Jets but has been a total gem at guard with the Eagles. The Eagles lost Jason Kelce this offseason but the impact hasn’t really been felt. Mostly because Becton, who signed a one year contract with Philly this offseason, has been unbelievable. That’s with Cam Jurgens doing a more than adequate job at center.

I could go through all the numbers but that’s all boring to me. You’re smart enough to understand the offensive line has been a positive influence and Saquon Barkley has been the perfect cherry on top. What really needs to be talked about is team building.

Becton is a perfect example of why bad teams stay bad. Life is all about expectations and when you don’t understand those expectations, you get burnt.

A big reason why the same teams continue to suck over and over again is because 95% of the league doesn’t understand how to execute the NFL Draft properly.

If you go back to my Combine notes from the 2020 NFL Draft, I tried to make it as abundantly clear as possible. Andrew Thomas and Tristan Wifs were blue chip guys. Jedrick Wills was probably a red chip player. Mekhi Becton had talent but was filled with red flags.

Guess which one the Jets picked?

Yup…

I gave the Jets an F for that draft class and it’s a big reason why they still suck today. Taking Becton ahead of Wirfs was a massive mistake and any player filled with risk shouldn’t be asked to be a savior of the franchise.

Expectations. Buffalo Sabres fans are aware of this. Hell, look at a guy like Victor Olofsson who was lost in Buffalo. Pair him back up with Jack Eichel in Vegas and now he looks like a player again.

Sam Darnold was labeled a bust. Then he goes to the Vikings and wins 14 games.

Same player. Different expectations.

A player who couldn’t really stay healthy and was too clumsy to play tackle all of the sudden looks like a monster when plugged into the right role with different expectations.

Success at the NFL level is predicated on team building and an understanding on how the NFL Draft works. Most bad teams stay on the vicious cycle for those same reasons.

The Philadelphia Eagles are in the NFC Title game again. How many players did their GM take from the University of Georgia? Then ask yourself if it’s an accident if the team that got gift-wrapped Jalen Carter is one win away from the Super Bowl.

Bad teams stay bad and it has everything to do with the fact that those teams don’t understand leadership and team building.
