Manchester City To Sign Kevin De Bruyne Replacement From Wolves

According to Fabrizio Romano, Manchester City is set to sign Matheus Nunes from Wolves. City will pay Wolves a €55 million ($60 million) transfer fee to secure the 25-year-old Portuguese international’s services.

City was forced to look for midfield reinforcements following Kevin De Bruyne‘s devastating hamstring injury suffered on the opening day of the 2023-2024 Premier League season against Burnley. De Bruyne will be out for up to six months, meaning he will miss the first half of the season for Manchester City.

This was also De Bruyne’s second hamstring injury in a short span. He also suffered one in the 2023 Champions League Final that forced a premature exit from what would ultimately be City’s first-ever Champions League victory. After finally returning to fitness from this injury, he will have to yet again take to the sideline as he recovers from yet another unfortunate hamstring problem.

Apart from maybe Erling Haaland, De Bruyne is City’s most valuable player in attack. He can create goals, both for himself and his teammates, out of thin air. No player, in my opinion, strikes more fear in opposition defenders’ hearts than Kevin De Bruyne when he gets the ball in the final third.

Replacing De Bruyne is impossible. However, City has done well in finding a good replacement for the next six months in Matheus Nunes. While they missed out on West Ham’s Lucas Paquetá, Nunes can provide the creative sparkplug for City that they need. He can also play as a defensive midfielder as well as an attacking one, providing cover for City in both positions.

Another positive about signing Nunes is that he already has Premier League experience. He spent the last year with Wolves after moving from Portuguese giants Sporting last summer. All of these reasons made Pep Guardiola ultimately push for a player he has previously labeled as “one of the best players in the world.”

Part of the deal is also a loan move for Manchester City youngster Thomas Doyle to Wolves. The deal includes a £5 million purchase option, and City will get 50 percent of all future sales for Doyle.
