HBO Cancels ‘Winning Time’ After Two Seasons

I have some terrible news to report. I’m not sure if you caught any of ‘Winning Time’ on HBO but it’s a really good show. Or at least season one was, I haven’t seen the second season yet. I usually wait for a full season to be released so I can binge it all at once. The season two finale ended last night.

Apparently, it wasn’t good enough for HBO. Front Office Sports has reported that HBO has canceled Winning Time after just two seasons.

This is such a shame and this show had so much potential. That show does such a great job at portraying the Showtime Lakers. All of the characters have their own quirks that are easy to root for. The show is based on Jeff Pearlman’s book. Pearlman put out a tweet last month indicating that the show was in trouble.

This is just a total shame. This show could have kept going for ten plus seasons. Season one only covered Magic’s rookie year. The amount of storylines they could have dug up from the Celtics rivalry alone…

I’m not sure if this is on the table but Netflix or another streaming platform should really think about picking this up. The show has a ton of potential. The actor that plays Magic Johnson is really good too. Maybe the ratings were bad or maybe the peer pressure kicked in from guys like Kareem and Magic speaking out against the show. Either way, a show with so much promise has died a premature death.
