Liverpool set to sign Dominik Szoboszlai

Hungarian attacking midfielder Dominik Szoboszlai is set to be a Liverpool player next season.

Liverpool activated Szoboszlai’s €70 million ($76m) release clause, according to ESPN, meaning that his current team, RB Leipzig, has to accept the bid and that Szoboszlai is free to move to the Reds.

Szoboszlai has already agreed to personal terms and is set to undergo his medical this weekend. He is expected to sign a five-year contract with the English side.

Szoboszlai fits the profile of what Jürgen Klopp was targeting this transfer window: A dynamic attacking midfielder who can contribute both goals and assists to an already dangerous Liverpool attack.

After missing out on Mason Mount to Manchester United, Liverpool turned their full attention to the Hungarian international. He scored 10 goals and provided 13 assists in 46 games for Leipzig last season.

After moving from RB Salzburg in 2021, he has proven to be a dangerous attacking midfielder for RB Leipzig in the Bundesliga. He can beat players off the dribble, strike the ball well and play a killer ball when given the opportunity.

Last season, he ranked fourth in the Bundesliga for chances created from open play. He was going toe-to-toe with Bayern standouts in Leroy Sané, Serge Gnabry and Jamal Musiala in this category. He was also creating more chances per game than Real Madrid’s new signing Jude Bellingham.

If Jürgen Klopp can get similar numbers from Szoboszlai next season, Liverpool is going to have an elite playmaker on their hands.

After finishing just outside of the top-four last season, Klopp needed to hit the transfer market to improve his squad ahead of next season. Liverpool has already signed Alexis Mac Allister for £35 million this summer. Now, they are adding Domink Szoboszlai, who can help elevate the team as they look to become a challenger for the Premier League title once again.

Meanwhile, this is Leipzig’s second star to leave the club this summer. They also lost Christopher Nkunku to Chelsea earlier this transfer window.
