James Maddison Joins Tottenham
Tottenham announced the signing of James Maddison from recently-relegated Leicester City on Wednesday.
The two clubs agreed to a £40 million fee for the 26-year-old. Maddison has signed a five-year contract with Spurs that will keep him in North London until 2028.
Maddison had been with Leicester since 2018 when he signed from Norwich City for £20 million. During his five years with the Foxes, he made 203 appearances, scoring 55 goals and providing 41 assists.
Ten of these goals were scored last season. However, his offensive contribution was not enough to prevent Leicester from getting relegated. They finished in 18th-place in the league, narrowly missing out on safety on the final day of the season after Everton defeated Bournemouth 1-0 to secure its place in the Premier League next season.
Once Leicester was relegated, it seemed inevitable that Maddison would be on the move. The Englishman is an elite player who can be one of the best playmakers in the Premier League when surrounded with the right support.
Arsenal, Newcastle and Tottenham were the clubs most interested in securing Maddison’s signature. However, with Arsenal turning their attention towards Kai Havertz and Newcastle cooling their interest in the attacking midfielder, Tottenham emerged as the favorite to sign Maddison.
Maddison is a good signing for Tottenham’s new manager Ange Postecoglou. Spurs have lacked an elite playmaker since Christian Eriksen’s departure from the club in 2020. Maddison has proven that he can create both goals and assists while playing for Leicester and will be able to fill the void Eriksen’s departure created as Tottenham look to rebuild under Postecoglou.
This is Tottenham’s third signing of the summer so far. They have also permanently signed Dejan Kulusevski after he won on loan with the club last season and signed goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario from Udinese.
Leicester, meanwhile, is getting ready for life in the Championship next year. They made headlines earlier this week with their interest in American goalkeeper Zack Steffen.
