Leeds United Finally have New Ownership
After a terrible season that saw Leeds United be relegated from the Premier League, a change in ownership has finally come. According to a statement from the team Aser Ventures and 49ers Enterprises have purchased the team.
The San Francisco 49ers had a share of Leeds alongside the majority owner Andrea Radrizzani, but have upped their investment to full ownership of the Yorkshire club. They first invested in Leeds in 2018 but reached a 44 percent share this past season.
This was a much-needed purchase as Radrizzani has been looking to buy Sampdoria, and the 49ers have been looking to gain more of a stake in the club. The Italian businessman had owned Leeds since taking over in 2017.
There was hope that the 49ers enterprise would buy a majority share from Radrizzani following the 2022-23 Premier League season. However, Leeds being relegated to the EFL Championship complicated matters.
The deal is not yet official as “Both parties continue to work through the details, and further updates will be provided soon.” As well as needing EFL approval for the purchase of the club.
Leeds could use a purchase like this to keep the team from doing what they did in 2004. That was the last time Leeds were relegated from the Premier League and after a mess of things from the owners they found themselves playing in League 1, the third division of English football.
The goal for Leeds has been made clear in the club’s statement.
“All of our focus remains on a quick return to the Premier League.”
An investment like this could be crucial to Leeds keeping some key players around for the upcoming 2023-24 season. The 2023-24 Championship season will begin on August 5, 2023, which gives the 49ers plenty of time to get their foot through the door and make their presence known.
