The Las Vegas Raiders have made some brutal moves over the years with Mayock and Gruden, but are they really that stupid? It’s time to look over what the Raiders have done over the past few years of the new Gruden era and see if they’re just as dumb as they appear.
The one and only thing I can applaud the Raiders on is that they made contracts that are possible to get out of. Sure, their offseasons that involved throwing cash around like the world was ending were entertaining to watch, and a lot of those moves did not pan out. However, at least the Raiders were able to get out of a contract like Trent Brown, Tyrell Williams, and Lamarcus Joyner. They were also able to void all of the guarantees in Antonio Brown’s contract and get out of a massive headache as it was beginning to emerge. But that’s pretty much the only way I can give the Raiders any credit. They managed to avoid handcuffing themselves to terrible deals, but they still made those terrible deals and terrible decisions.
Everywhere else. Literally everywhere else. The Las Vegas Raiders have been the kings of questionable moves. Jon Gruden deserves the heat, and Mike Mayock better be on the chopping block. I mentioned the ability to get out of terrible deals, which is still somewhere the Raiders deserve credit. However, making those terrible deals is still a massive issue on its own. The Raiders paid Joyner high-end safety money and then moved him back to slot corner. They hit delete on their offensive line, which is something you never want to do. I was tough on the Pittsburgh Steelers for involuntarily having to reconstruct the majority of their offensive line, and the Raiders deserve even more heat for voluntarily deleting and rebuilding their offensive line. Do not even get me started on their drafting. The Raiders simply can’t draft, they fail to understand how to play the value game, and it’s infuriating to watch.
I really wanted to try and give the Raiders some credit, but I just can’t. They find ways to get out of a few of their own crappy moves, but they completely offset that by making more crappy moves and not learning from their mistakes. It’s unfortunate, but the Raiders are dumber than they appear.
