Kevin Garnett to Have No. 5 Jersey Retired by the Celtics

Kevin Garnett will have his jersey retired this upcoming season by the Celtics, as first reported by the Celtics’ Twitter page. The ceremony will happen on March 13, 2022 when the Dallas Mavericks visit the TD Garden.

Garnett was inducted into the Naismith Hall of Fame earlier this year as a part of the 2020 class that also featured Kobe Bryant, Tim Duncan and Tamika Catchings among others. Garnett played 21 seasons in the league, spending six years with the Celtics. The 45-year-old was drafted by the Minnesota Timberwolves out of high school and played with the franchise from 1995-2007 and then one final season from 2015-16.

While Garnett spent much of his career with the T-Wolves, he has not considered the idea of a jersey retirement with the franchise that drafted him. With the Celtics officially confirming that the No. 5 jersey will forever hang in the rafters of the TD Garden, it appears that the No. 21 jersey will still be around for future Minnesota players to choose.

The Uncut Gems star won his only NBA title with the C’s in 2008 with a team that also featured Paul Pierce and Ray Allen. He was the 2004 NBA MVP and the 2008 NBA Defensive Player of the Year. Garnett is a 15-time All-Star and earned nine All-Defensive first team nods in his career.

Last year, Garnett had this to say regarding what the city of Boston and its fanbase meant to him:

“The fan base in Boston was over the top. People would follow you home, people would stand outside your gate when you get home, people wanted to pump your gas – weird people. Like the fan base in Boston was just another level. But I learned to embrace it. My only regret in any of this was that I should have came to Boston a little earlier. Other than that, it was magical.”
