Jordan Montgomery signed with the Diamondbacks right before the season and it turned out to be a massive mistake. Arizona missed the playoffs with 89 wins while losing the tiebreaker to both the Mets and Braves. If they just didn’t sign Montgomery, Arizona probably would be in and Ken Kendrick, the D-Backs owner, knows it.
“If anyone wants to blame anyone for Jordan Montgomery being a Diamondback, you’re talking to the guy that should be blamed because I brought it to their attention,” Kendrick told Arizona Sports’ ‘The Burns & Gambo Show.’ “I pushed for it. They agreed to it. It wasn’t in our game plan.”
“In hindsight, it was a horrible decision to have invested that money in a guy that performed as poorly as he did. It’s our biggest mistake this season from a talent standpoint, and I’m the perpetrator of that.”
It turns out that signing Montgomery was an ownership decision. Which makes sense given the bloated number on the contract he ultimately signed for. Montgomery sported a 6.23 ERA with 1.65 WHIP in his lone season with the D-Backs.
In fairness to Montgomery, a lot of this is on Scott Boras too. Pitchers need to be at Spring Training. If they’re not, it screws up their entire season. That’s what happened with Montgomery and it ruined his whole season.
Montgomery will hit the market again this offseason and he will end up signing for a lot less than he just signed for. Whatever happens, it’s safe to say he won’t be back in Arizona.
