Serbia winger Aleksander Katai is leaving LA Galaxy. Katai’s wife, Tea, had reportedly posted on social media mocking the Black Lives Matter movement and joked about looting.
LA Galaxy and Katai held a meeting on Thursday to figure out their next steps. The team issued a one-sentence statement claiming that they have mutually parted ways.
LA Galaxy said in a previous statement: “LA Galaxy were made aware of a series of racist and violent social media posts by Tea Katai, the wife of LA Galaxy midfielder Aleksandar Katai.
“The LA Galaxy strongly condemned the social posts and requested their immediate removal. The LA Galaxy stands firmly against racism of any kind, including that which suggests violence or seeks to demean the efforts of those in pursuit of racial equality.”
Katai has also stated that he does not share the same views as his wife. Also he does not tolerate it in his family.
“This is a mistake from my family and I take full responsibility,” said the 29-year-old.
He also added: “I will ensure that my family and I take the necessary actions to learn, understand, listen and support the black community.
“I am sorry for the pain these posts have caused the LA Galaxy family and all allies in the fight against racism.”
Katai played two seasons with Chicago Fire FC, Red Star Belgrade and Alaves in La Liga. He was only able to make two appearances for LA Galaxy.
