Jurgen Klopp: Chelsea spending is not sustainable

Jurgen Klopp claimed that Chelsea’s spending under its new owner, Todd Boehly, is not sustainable, after Boehly sanctioned another £190 million investment this January transfer market.

Speaking ahead of the two clubs’ matchup on Saturday, Klopp expressed surprise at how Chelsea can afford so much.

“Interesting (the spending),” Klopp said. “I cannot explain it, I have no idea. But if the numbers are true then it’s impressive.”

Chelsea have now spent £460million since Boehly took over as co-owner and chairman on May 30, 2022, most notably signing Mykhailo Mudryk from Shakhtar Donetsk for around £88.5 million earlier this month despite significant interest from Arsenal. He was their sixth signing of the January window. Other key signings including Noni Madueke from PSV for £29 million, Joao Felix on loan from Atletico Madrid and Benoit Badiashile from AS Monaco for £35 million.

Klopp does not think this level of spending can be maintained in the long term .

“I can’t see investment stopping in the future, so that means we have to do it as well,” Klopp said.

“I believe in coaching, developing and team building 100%. But meanwhile the managers out there, they are all good and they believe in that as well.

“So if they start spending then if we don’t spend, you will have a problem. I am not sure Chelsea can do that for the next 10 years though.”

Liverpool, on the other hand, have been stingier in the transfer market. The only player they have signed this window has been Cody Gakpo from PSV for an undisclosed fee, reportedly between £35 and £45 million if certain conditions are met.

This is despite Liverpool desperately needing a midfielder. Liverpool have struggled this season and are on a run of poor form, losing their last two Premier League games. Their midfielders are too old and can’t run like they used to. They’re still starting James Milner in some games. Klopp’s tactics need midfielders that can press high and cover large spaces whilst their attackers and full backs push up. Jordan Henderson and Fabinho don’t have the legs to do that anymore.

Chelsea’s squad is also a bit of a mess. They have players that several different managers want, and don’t seem to have a good idea where to fit them all in. Their transfer market strategy is unclear as well. It almost seems like Boehly sees shiny new toys and instantly jumps on them.

Madueke and Mudryk could turn out great in the future but given the array of attacking options Chelsea already have it’s unclear when they’ll play. They still don’t have an out and out striker to provide a box presence to complement their wingers. Is Havertz really the best they’ve got?

Saturday’s game is vital for both clubs’ seasons. Both have disappointed so far. Liverpool sit in ninth and Chelsea sit in 10th. A win could spur either of them on to making a push for the Champions League spots; a loss could see them slip into further midtable mediocrity.
