Chelsea has officially signed Ukrainian international Mykhailo Mudryk to an 8½-year contract, following his transfer from Shakhtar Donetsk. The news was announced midway through Chelsea’s match against Crystal Palace on Sunday.
The 22-year-old Mudryk was signed for a package worth €100 million or $108m. A fixed fee of €70m was included in the package along with an additional €30m of add-ons.
The announcement of his signing must have given Chelsea a much-needed boost as they took the lead against Crystal Palace roughly 16 minutes following the announcement. They ultimately held on for a 1-0 win over their London rivals.
The thought of Mudryk going to Chelsea was not always there as Arsenal seemed to be the frontrunner to sign the Ukrainian winger. It was not until recently that Chelsea took control of the transfer and stole him away from the Premier League leaders.
“I’m so happy to sign for Chelsea,” Mudryk said in the club’s statement. “This is a huge club, in a fantastic league and it is a very attractive project for me at this stage of my career. I’m excited to meet my new teammates and I’m looking forward to working and learning under Graham Potter and his staff.”
In the 2022-23 season, Mudryk scored 10 goals in 18 matches including three goals in the UEFA Champions League. He also has eight assists with seven having come in the Ukrainian Premier League.
His seven league goals are the third most this year, while his seven assists lead Ukraine’s top division. With his help, Shakhtar Donetsk sits second in the league, five points behind the league leaders SC Dnipro-1.
Meanwhile, he will be joining a Chelsea team that currently sits 10th in the English Premier League. Signing Mudryk brings Chelsea’s total to 13 players that have been brought in during the 2022-23 season.
Chelsea has now spent over $400m on new signings this season, yet continues to find them in a struggling position. Last Thursday, Chelsea debuted their latest lone signing João Félix. It was a debut to forget as the Portuguese player was shown a red card after 58 minutes.
