Jordan Montgomery will be traded before the deadline for the second year in a row! Less than a year after the Cardinals acquired him from the Yankees, they are dealing the starter to the Texas Rangers.
Not even 24 hours after acquiring former Cy Young winner Max Scherzer, they now add another starter and reliever. Jeff Passan confirmed the return for the Cards:
Full trade, per ESPN sources:
— Jeff Passan (@JeffPassan) July 30, 2023
Rangers receive: LHP Jordan Montgomery and RHR Chris Stratton
Cardinals receive: IF Thomas Saggese, RHP Tekoah Roby and LHP John King
The deal is done. The Rangers get another starter and another reliever. They are all in.
Talk about being all-in. The pitching staff at Globe Life Field is now quite intriguing. With Nathan Eovaldi very much in the AL Cy Young discussion, they will now add some reinforcements ahead of a thrilling race to the division with Houston. The main talking point with the Rangers this season has been their electrifying offense. Now, they’re gonna have a pretty serious rotation and a very good chance of making noise this October.
Montgomery, like most of the Cardinals, has had a down year. However, he does have a 1.35 ERA in two postseason starts. He’s proven to be a reliable third or fourth starter from his time in the Bronx. Throw in Andrew Heaney and that’s not a bad rotation. Stratton comes out of the bullpen along with the likes of Josh Sborz and Aroldis Chapman. Do you think they have a chance?
Everyone wants to know if they’re done buying. They have emptied out a big chunk of the farm on back to back days. You can never be too ready when it’s the defending champs on your neck. They have a lot of bats, especially in the depth department. I will be very interested in seeing if this team looks anymore different between now and Tuesday.
Jordan Montgomery is on the move for the second year running. And just like that, the Rangers have completely transformed the starting pitching market in less than 24 hours. Who do you think gets traded next? And could it be another St. Louis Cardinal?
