“That’s kind of gay” – Errol Spence talks relationship with Terence Crawford

Errol Spence Jr. went out on his sword last night after suffering a TKO loss to Terence Crawford, Crawford therefore becoming the Undisputed World Welterweight Champion.

Crawford was dominant, taking the victory in round nine when Spence could not defend himself, as the referee stopped the fight. The fight had been compared to Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather Jr.’s 2015 clash, both similarly tarnished by a belief that it should have been staged sooner.

Errol Spence entered the bout 28-0-0 as the undefeated IBF, WBC, and WBA Super World Welterweight Champion. Crawford similarly undefeated, with a record of 39-0-0, and holding the WBO World title. But it would be Crawford who kept his record intact and take his rightful place at the top of the division.

Speaking ahead of the bout, in an interview with the Boxing News Magazine, Spence admitted a degree of professional respect for his foe. But he didn’t see the need to dwell on their relationship, opining that it would be “gay” to do so.

“[Crawford’s] a cool dude. I don’t have to not like somebody to make a good fight. He probably think I’m cool, but that’s something I don’t even think about. I mean, that’s kind of gay to think who likes who and, ‘Do he like me?’ and ‘Do I like him?’, I really don’t care.”

Errol Spence also took exception to the Mayweather-Pacquiao comparisons

The fight may not have been a success on the night for Spence, but the event in itself was as much a spectacle as it was an entertaining fight. Like Mayweather-Pacquiao before it, fans will forever ask the question as to what could have happened if the fight had been made sooner.

Either way, Spence didn’t appreciate that sentiment going into the fight. He pointed out the fact that Floyd and Pacquiao made much more than they would have if they had fought sooner:

“I’m fed up of the comparisons between Mayweather-Pacquiao and Spence-[Crawford]…Floyd and Pacquiao made 10 times as much as they would have made if they’d fought back then [2009]”

Going further, Spence explained that he was trying to make as much money as he can, such is the name of the game. He pointed at the interest in the event as a reason to shut down such discussions:

“It’s prize fighting. It’s not anything else. We do this for a living. We do this to make money. That’s two mega guys in the sport. If it was after it’s time, why are people turning in to watch the fight?”
