Jon Scheyer Will Keep Duke Basketball Relevant
Before the start of the 2021-22 college basketball season, legendary Duke head coach Mike Krzyzewski announced that this would be his last year at the helm of the Blue Devils program. With a bevy of candidates for the job, Duke handed the reins to associate head coach and former Duke guard Jon Scheyer.
Scheyer’s Recruiting Will Keep the Blue Devils In the Mix
The Blue Devils aren’t going anywhere just because Coach K is stepping down. Jon Scheyer’s dominance in recruiting will keep Duke Basketball relevant. He’s already off to a hot start in the 2022 high school class. He started out securing the commitment of four-star prospect Kyle Filipowski. Scheyer followed that up by landing five-star Dariq Whitehead. This isn’t anything new. The Duke alumnus has always been a phenomenal recruiter.
247Sports frequently lists Scheyer among the top recruiters in the nation. He is currently ranked No. 2 for the 2022 class. Looking at his recruiter profile shows that he’s been behind some of the biggest commitments of the Coach K era. Scheyer was the primary recruiter for Jayson Tatum, Paolo Banchero, Cam Reddish, Vernon Carey Jr., Jalen Johnson, Frank Jackson, and Matthew Hurt, among others. He was the secondary recruiter for Zion Williamson and Luke Kennard. Jon Scheyer has been quietly fueling Duke Basketball by securing big-time talents.
If you were hoping for Duke Basketball to fall off once Coach K leaves, it’s looking like that probably won’t be the case. Their 33-year-old coach-in-waiting will keep them in the mix with his recruiting talents.
