We already went over Keon Coleman. Now we’re discussing the other Florida State wide receiver, Johnny Wilson. What does Wilson’s potential look like at the NFL level? Let’s ponder it over as we review his 2024 NFL Draft Profile!
That’s a tall drink of water right there. Wilson checks in at 6-foot-6, 231, with over 35 inch arms. His length presents problems for people. I thought he had a positive showing at the Combine too. Gets off the line of scrimmage better than I gave him credit for. A 4.52 time during the 40 is really good for his frame. Posted really good leaping numbers too including a 10’8″ in the broad.
I think we’re all asking the wrong questions with Wilson. Do people forget what happened with Kelvin Benjamin? Another tall drink of water that totally flamed out. The problem is I don’t know what Wilson is. We’ve seen overgrown receivers like this fail time and time again at the NFL level. Mostly from not being explosive enough and creating their own separation. Wilson very well might fall into that category. Call it the Devin Funchess disease. At the Senior Bowl, he gave you those PTSD moments. The good news for Wilson is that he’s actually faster than those guys and that very well may save him.
Wilson’s best path forward very well might be as a tight end. Go be the next Darren Waller. It’s the same mistake Chase Claypool never seemed to understand. The NFL has created a new position in recent years. It’s called the Big F. Juwan Johnson has turned into a success story as an undrafted guy filling that void. Wilson has more potential than that. If you can get him up to 250 while maintaining that 4.5 speed, Wilson could emerge as a threat at tight end. It’s his best chance to be a high ceiling player. He’s not a bad blocker but maybe not qualified yet to be an in-line guy.
Wilson got his start at Arizona State. Did nothing there for two years. Finished up at Florida State and had two solid years there. Former four star guy reigning from the state of California. Reeled in an insane 20.9 yards per catch as a junior. Numbers took a dip this past year reeling in 41 receptions for 617 yards and two scores. Clearly took a back seat to Coleman.
There is something to work with here. Huge catch radius. Decent build up speed. He gets beat up in press far more than you would like. Slow footed in short area but he’s an impressive mover once he gets going.
4th, 5th, and 6th round, I’m in on Johnny Wilson. Except for me, it’s as a big F. Very much a project but one that could pay dividends. Go be a tight end and take your game to the next level. Just not good enough as a pure wide receiver based on the rest of the incoming talent at the position.
