Indianapolis Colts owner Jim Irsay might be a raging moron but you can’t deny that he’s a pretty straight shooter. He will let you know his opinion even if he shouldn’t. We’re talking about a guy that hired Jeff Saturday as the head coach with zero coaching experience. Irsay is a oddball and you never really know what that guy is thinking.
I guess it depends on how you look at it but Irsay had a pretty fair take when being asked about his rookie quarterback, Anthony Richardson. Irsay pretty much says he expects Richardson to stink as a rookie but it’s more important that he gets the reps needed.
“For Anthony Richardson, it’s going to be tough . We know that,” Irsay said on the Pat McAfee Show on Monday. “But he has to play to get better. I mean, there’s no question. Gardner [Minshew] could play come out and obviously play better early on, just being a veteran, but we have to get Anthony on the field. That’s Shane’s call when he decides to do it.”
He’s right in a sense and you appreciate the honesty. When Peyton Manning suited up as a rookie, he came from Tennessee where he posted 45 starts with the Vols. Richardson only started 13 total games at Florida. Richardson needs the starts and there is nobody else in house other than Gardner Minshew who the Colts signed this offseason. We’re also talking about a guy that threw 17 touchdown passes while posting a 53.8 completion percentage. This thing is going to take time even if it ends up working.
