While football fans around the world have been watching the World Cup, Manchester City star Erling Haaland has been resting up in preparation for a return to action. His first opponent is Leeds United and their manager, Jesse Marsch, has a plan to stop the Norwegian star.
Marsch jokingly texted Haaland giving him permission to be injured when the two meet on Dec. 28 at Elland Road.
“He texted me as soon as the schedule came out,” Marsch said, according to ESPN. “He said he’s most excited for this, and I gave him permission to have a small hamstring injury for that match!”
The relationship between Haaland and Marsch dates back to 2019 when the two were at Red Bull Salzburg together. Under Marsch, Haaland established himself as a rising star, scoring 28 goals in 22 matches and subsequently earning a transfer to Borussia Dortmund.
This may be a worthy plan to stop the machine that is Erling Haaland, since nothing anyone else has tried seems to work. Since joining Manchester City this summer, Haaland has scored 24 goals in 19 matches, including a league-leading 18 Premier League goals.
Haaland and Leeds have a history together with his father Alfie Haaland spending three seasons playing for the Yorkshire side. Erling was also born in Leeds and occasionally mentions his love for the team.
Leeds is outmatched on paper against Manchester City, especially with a rested Haaland, who is refinding his form. It took him just nine minutes to get on the scoresheet in Man City’s Carabao Cup match against Liverpool Thursday.
