Days after winning the 2022 World Cup, Argentina’s Lionel Messi has made a decision about his club future. While Messi was mentioned to have interest in joining the MLS according to football journalist Fabrizio Romano the Argentine has agreed to a deal with Paris Saint-Germain.
The highly regarded journalist tweeted on Wednesday that Messi has verbally accepted a new contract with his current club PSG. This news does not come as a surprise considering the 35-year-old still looked to be good enough to play with the world’s best.
This is probably the right move for Messi who is officially the sport’s GOAT following his heroics in Qatar. The MLS has long been considered a retirement league for European players with the likes of David Beckham, Thierry Henry, and Andrea Pirlo all going to the United States following the end of their European careers. While they had ups and downs in the MLS, Messi would be far too good for the American league. If he were to play there, he would dominate in a similar fashion to Zlatan Ibrahimović, who returned to one of Europe’s top leagues after two seasons in the MLS in which he scored 53 goals in 58 matches.
While nothing has been signed yet, both Romano and the French publication La Parisien mentioned that a deal will be signed soon. La Parisien also mentioned that the deal to renew his contract had been decided on during the 2022 World Cup.
This may have come as a surprise considering during the World Cup there were rumors about Messi possibly going to the MLS after the season ends. Along with Inter Miami, Barcelona had also expressed interest in bringing Messi back to the Catalan team. However, PSG seemed to be one step ahead of the rest in the chase to sign Messi.
Staying at PSG allows Messi to still compete at the top level in Europe which he clearly still can. The team still has the goal of winning the UEFA Champions League for the first time and keeping Messi for at least one more season could be the difference.
The star forward has been celebrating his World Cup win back in Argentina, but will likely return to France in the next few days. Upon his return, it was reported that the new contract would be signed. Ligue 1 returns to action on Dec. 28 with PSG hosting Strasbourg. This will be a match to see because Messi will be returning to a club team that pairs him with his World Cup Final foe Kylian Mbappé in the country that Argentina beat to win the 2022 World Cup.
