I just did the profile on Marist Liufau (which can be seen in the embed or by clicking this link). Liufau struggles with long speed. He was way faster than Bertrand watching the games. Liufau didn’t run fast at the Combine. Bertrand didn’t even attempt to do so. That right there tells a big story. Bertrand might not have the requisite speed to even make the NFL.

If you’re looking for positives, the Alpharetta, Georgia native did rip out 20 reps on the bench. That’s who Bertrand is. Strong, has real football production, and is a total grinder. Bertrand is a three year starter for Notre Dame and was a team captain for the final two. The box score stuff isn’t super sexy but he was over 100 tackles as a sophomore. He’s been a plug and play guy for them just being a reliable field presence.

It’s the other stuff that’s going to make Bertrand dip. It’s not hard to figure out the flaw here. Despite being a four star guy coming out of high school, he just lacks range. Can’t see him being a guy that tracks ball carriers down east-west. When your linebackers are slow, your defense is slow. I’m not sure Bertrand holds up in that regard.

Get the guy going downhill while plugging him on special teams, maybe Bertrand becomes a useful player for someone.

With JD Bertrand, I think you’re looking at a 6th or 7th rounder. Just a limited athlete and is going to have to make a roster as a grinder. Not impossible but I just don’t see any real high ceiling here with the player. Going to have to be a special teams guy and may crack the lineup down the line.
