If the Celtics win the NBA Title this year, they better give Danny Ainge a ring. That’s all I know. This Celtics team is flawed and it’s because of all of the shortcomings by Brad Stevens this offseason. The core of Jayson Tatum, Jaylen Brown, Robert Williams, Grant Williams, and Marcus Smart (all drafted by Ainge) is very much intact.
Speaking of Jayson Tatum, he was recently asked about how he views Danny Ainge. Check out what he had to say to local reporters.
“We’ll always have a great relationship,” Tatum said, per MassLive’s Souichi Terada. “I’m very thankful for him. Essentially took a chance on a 19-year-old kid and drafted me and made my dream come true. I’ll always be thankful for that, regardless of wherever I’m at, wherever he’s at. I’ll always remember him in that way. He was kind of the guy that made the decision to help my dream come true. So I’m very thankful for that.“
Think of the alternate universe that may have happened had Ainge not picked Tatum. Remember that infamous trade that led to the swap? There is also another alternate universe where Boston passes and Josh Jackson comes to the Celtics instead. The Celtics could have picked Lonzo Ball instead? YUCK. I don’t think anyone wants to imagine that reality.
The same goes for Tatum. Imagine if Ainge passes and Tatum rots in Sacramento? Prior to Kevin Huerter’s arrival, the Kings were a place to go die as a player. Jackson didn’t pan out in Phoenix but what about Tatum? Now that what if is too big of a brain buster right now so we’re going to end the post right here. If someone has a what if the Suns drafted Tatum theory, be my guest to continue from here.
