Jaylen Brown to invest in Boston community after record-setting contract

Only shortly after signing the richest contract in NBA history, it looks like Jaylen Brown is committed to Boston on and off the court.

Brown has been a star on the court for the Celtics for years. Last season, he averaged around 27 points per game, seven rebounds and four assists on 49 percent shooting from the field. It’s hard to get a player in this NBA with those types of numbers on efficient shooting.

Now, the former California guard is looking to continue his stardom off the court in Boston.

“I appreciate the investment and the commitment from the Celtics,” Brown told reporters, via ESPN. “That commitment will be felt from me here in Boston on and off the floor.”

Before Brown and the Celtics signed the super-max deal, the two sides became separated in contract talks. Brown took a trip overseas, resulting in a silence in talks, but only a few days after he joined the Celtics in the United States, the deal would be signed.

“From my standpoint, they understood where I came from, they understood where we came from and it was all about meeting in a place where it made sense for everybody,” Brown said.

There’s analytics that support that stimulating the wealth gap is something that could be a betterment for the entire economy,” Brown said. “With the biggest financial deal in NBA history, it makes sense to talk about one, your investment in community. But two, also the wealth disparity here that nobody wants to talk about. … It’s something we can all improve on.”

Some may think the contract is a little overpriced for a player like Brown, especially after his most recent playoff run, but looking to the future, it became a great deal.

Boston Celtics co-owner Wyc Grousbeck views Brown’s new deal as more than a contract in the basketball world. He knows that Brown can be a big impact off the court as well.

“It’s not just about a contract or money or playing basketball. It’s about making a difference in life,” Grousbeck said. “That’s what Jaylen embodies to me and to my partner Steve [Pagliuca] and others and to all of us here at the Celtics. He’s a true Celtic. He’s a Celtic for years to come.”

Even with the new contract, Brown is looked ahead to next season, seeking his first NBA championship and exceeding expectations.

“I look at life as stages and degrees,” Brown said. “Everything that I went through throughout my career has prepared me for each stage. … I don’t shy away from pressure, I know what the demand is. I know what the expectation level is. And I know the work that is required. Everything about me is about work. So I look at it as just another challenge.”
