After a brief shutdown of contract talks, Jaylen Brown and the Boston Celtics have finally come to a deal. Brown has agreed to sign a five-year, $304 million supermax contract extension with the Celtics, NBA insider Shams Charania of The Athletic was first to report Tuesday.
It has finally happened. Ladies and gentlemen, Brad Stevens has pulled the trigger on the Jaylen Brown supermax extension.
Brown has been a part of the Boston Celtics’ one-two punch for several years now, and he has now been rewarded for it. Apart from postseason struggles from Brown, he has been an All-NBA guard for some time now. Last season, he averaged around 27 points per game, seven rebounds and four assists on 49 percent from the field. It’s hard to get a player in this NBA with those types of numbers on efficient shooting.
Prior to his extension, only a few months back, Brown has his doubts on staying in Boston. In an interview with Logan Murdock of The Ringer, Brown expressed those doubts in a response.
“I don’t know. As long as I’m needed. It’s not up to me,” Brown said. “We’ll see how they feel about me over time and I feel about them over time. Hopefully, whatever it is, it makes sense. But I will stay where I’m wanted. I will stay where I’m needed and treated correct.
“I just enjoy the time that you have now,” he said. “If it’s your whole career, it’s your whole career. If it’s not, it’s not. Some of the greatest players of all time haven’t finished with their organization. Michael Jordan retired a Wizard. As much as we like it here and enjoy being here, you see where life takes you. You see how the process goes. All you do is really focus on what’s in front of you right now, to be honest. But I don’t really know or want to answer that question because that type of stuff makes Celtics fans speculate and go crazy. Especially right now, I’ll just say we’ll get there when we get there.”
But that quote is in the past, and Brown is locked up for the future and the Celtics are looking to win. Fellow Celtics star Jayson Tatum will be eligible for a supermax deal next summer, the Celtics will lock up two of the best players in the league for a while.
Did the Celtics overpay for Jaylen Brown? Was it just right? Can the Celtics continue their luck and reach another NBA Finals? Let us know in the comments down below.
