James Franklin Thinks Notre Dame Should Be In A Conference

Penn State and Notre Dame square off in the Orange Bowl tonight for a chance to play in the National Title. However, that didn’t stop James Franklin from taking shots at the Fighting Irish prior to the showdown.

During the recent press conference session, Marcus Freeman said something along the lines of “representing our schools and our conferences.”.

That sent Franklin on a complete tirade about how Notre Dame should be in a conference.

“Or our conference, excuse me,” Franklin said.

“It should be consistent across college football,” Franklin said. “This is no knock at [Freeman] or Notre Dame, but I think everybody should be in a conference. I think everybody should play a conference championship game, or nobody should play a conference champion championship game. I think everybody should play the same number of conference games.”

Why James Franklin Is NOT Overrated

The guy has a point. It’s really insane that Notre Dame doesn’t have to play a conference title game and still gets inserted into the playoff. Notre Dame lost to Northern Illinois and their best win is against a Georgia team that didn’t have Carson Beck. Would they even be in the playoff if they had to play in the Big 10?

We’ll never know but it’s certainly a conversation worth having. More than anything, there needs to be more regularity in scheduling between teams across the sport. That much should be certain to everyone regardless of who you root for.

Shout out to East Stroudsburg but Franklin finished his rant in a pretty funny way…

“I was not a math major at East Stroudsburg, but just the numbers are going to make things more challenging if you’re playing one more conference game,” he said.

“We need somebody that is looking at it from a big-picture perspective,” Franklin said.
