The talk for years has been that Notre Dame needs to join a conference to become a viable threat for the College Football Playoff. I beg to differ. Notre Dame consistently stacks their schedule with some of footballs best.
Last season Notre Dame was able to make the College Football Playoff with a 12-0 record beating ranked teams like Michigan, Stanford, Virginia Tech, and Syracuse. Following that up with a convincing win at USC. They hit a block in the road when they met Trevor Lawrence and the soon to be National Champs. But their schedule over the next few seasons proves why they do not need a conference title.
2020 – Arkansas, Wisconsin, Stanford, Clemson, Pitt, USC
2021 – Florida State, Purdue, Wisconsin, Virginia Tech, USC, North Carolina, Stanford
2022 – Ohio State, Stanford, Clemson, USC, North Carolina

If the Fighting Irish can continue to go undefeated in their regular season schedule then they will always be a legitimate threat to make the playoff due to the fact they will have convincing wins over some of the country’s best teams. Even if they drop a close game, similar to what they did a few weeks ago against Georgia, depending on how the field plays out, they should still get considered.
