No. 2 Overall Pick Jalen Green: “I Didn’t Want to be in Detroit”

Jalen Green was the second overall pick in the 2021 NBA Draft and should be a key part of the Houston Rockets’ rebuild in the coming years, but like many other draftees, he wanted to be the first name declared on draft night. However, there was one minor problem with his goal: he “didn’t want to be in Detroit.”

In an interview with Yahoo Sports’ Chris Haynes, the Fresno, CA native reiterated that Detroit was not a desirable location, even comparing it to the G League Bubble.

“I felt a lot more comfortable in Houston. It felt like a real homie environment. With Detroit, it felt like I was just going back to the G League bubble, and I just got out of the bubble. That’s pretty much what it was.”

He continued, saying:

“In the [G League] bubble, I didn’t really have anything to do but just stay in the gym. I didn’t have any time to get away for myself. The only time I had to get away for myself was in my apartment. That’s what it felt like in Detroit. I wouldn’t be stepping outside in Detroit. There are not many things you can do in Detroit like that. You’re going to stay in the gym and then go back to your apartment.”

Although Green went down with a sore hamstring in the Summer League, he did get a chance to play the Pistons and back up his sentiments before they were publicly declared. Green dropped 25 points on Detroit and outshined first overall pick Cade Cunningham (who, luckily, loves his new home in Detroit). The 19-year-old has no trouble giving his opinion and I have never been more excited for a Rockets-Pistons regular season contest.
