Jaguars Claim Darrell Henderson Off Waivers

Jaguars Claim Darrell Henderson Off Waivers

Just a day after he was surprisingly waived by the Rams, running back Darrell Henderson has been claimed off of waivers by the Jaguars.

Many NFL fans were shocked when the Rams suddenly waived Henderson. While he hadn’t been amazing, it was looking like the Rams gave up on the Cam Akers project and would instead rely on Henderson to be their main back.

Henderson has racked up 283 yards on 70 carries with three touchdowns this season. While these stats are far from elite or even great, he is still a great change of pace back. For a Rams offense that has been struggling mightily in 2022, the sudden release of Henderson seemed surprising.

Regardless of what prompted Henderson’s release, the Jaguars wasted no time bringing him in. While the Jaguars already have Travis Etienne, who looks like he’s finally finding his groove in the NFL, Henderson should serve as a great change of pace/goal-line running back.

This move should help a Jacksonville offense that has struggled this year on converting red zone trips into touchdowns as they currently rank 17th in that department. Henderson should serve as a great downhill runner and hopefully give this offense the red zone boost it needs.

Etienne should still serve as the primary back, but the addition of Henderson should help take some weight off his shoulders. I imagine his role will be similar to that of Jamaal Williams’ role on the Lions — although I don’t imagine he will be scoring as many touchdowns.

While the move to release Henderson is still a confusing one to me, I’m sure the Jaguars aren’t going to complain about it. It’s virtually a no-risk move for a Jaguars team trying to show some life late into the season. He is also on the last year of his contract so the Jaguars won’t even need to pay him come the end of the campaign.
