The New England Patriots are bringing back former 91st draft pick Jacoby Brissett on a one-year deal worth $8 million, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.
Brissett will return to the Patriots after last playing for the Washington Commanders. Jacoby didn’t see a lot of playing time during his time in Washington, as he mainly served as a backup to Sam Howell. Brissett only featured in three games, throwing for 224 yards and throwing three touchdowns, while rushing for 19 yards.
In his first tenure with New England, Brissett played three games and started two, had to fill in for Jimmy Garoppolo who got injured in week two of the 2016 season, while Tom Brady was suspended for four games in his role for Deflategate. In those three games, Brissett threw for 400 yards, with no touchdowns or interceptions. Brissett went 1-1 as a starter in his time.
The Patriots currently have the 3rd overall pick in the upcoming NFL Draft. The Patriots signing Brissett could indicate that the Patriots could draft a quarterback, with Brissett being the bridge to help the potential draftee.
With either Drake Maye or Jayden Daniels to be available with at the third overall pick, because Caleb Williams will most likely be taken first overall, Brissett will be the teacher to one of these two promising youngsters.
New England had made some moves before the start of the free agency legal tampering period, by putting the transition tag on Kyle Dugger and re-signing Kendrick Bourne.
The Patriots started off the day by signing another former Commander player in Antonio Gibson, who was one of the few signing the Patriots have made today.
