It’s Over: Rest In Peace To The 2021 New York Yankees

Yankees Continue To Disappoint And Now Are Only Three Games Over .500

Folks, I have seen enough. The New York Yankees were swept by their biggest rivals, the Boston Red Sox yesterday in perhaps their biggest series of the season. With the loss, they are now 0-6 against Boston and 6.5 games behind them for first place in the AL East. In other words, this Yankees team has proven that they are a complete waste of talent and a disgrace to the city of New York.

How Much More Will it Take?

Like I said in my last article about the Yankees, and the one before, and the one before that, Aaron Boone must go. His bullshit answers to questions, the lack of hustle shown by his team, and his seemingly indifferent persona all make it impossible to defend or feel bad for the guy. It goes without saying that he has presided over the most disappointing stretch in Yankee baseball since the 1980s. With that in mind, how much more losing will Hal Steinbrenner take until he makes a change?

Brian Cashman is the one pulling the strings behind the scenes, so he should be the one to blame for all of this, right? You would think so, but Hal seemingly has all the trust in the world in his GM. Nobody knows how much longer this team has to underperform in order for him to get rid of Cashman, who is practically the only person in the world still publicly on Aaron Boone’s side. See below:

Cashman Is Not What People Think

In 2017, when the Yankees made it within one game of the World Series against the cheating Astros, no one thought they would regress in the following years. After all, 2017 was supposed to be a rebuilding year. For the first time in forever, the Yankees looked primed to compete without buying their way to success. Two of their top four earners on that team were Jacoby Ellsbury and the recently retired A-Rod, both of whom did not play all year. Additionally, CC Sabathia was eating up 13% of the team’s payroll and his contract was up, so they actually had a lot of money to spend alongside a good, young core who were years away from extensions.

How Cashman eventually chose to allocate that cap room will be the reason they continue to come up short. Instead of looking to sign good hitters to bolster their lineup, he decided to trade for reigning MVP Giancarlo Stanton. Stanton had a huge contract, one that lasts until 2028. He also expected him to be able to play the outfield, but injury problems have now relegated Stanton into strictly being a DH.

What followed is probably the biggest waste of talent on a baseball team in recent memory. Added together with the Boone hiring that same year, the Yankees blew multiple seasons of their best players being paid nothing, further proving that Cashman has not worked out as GM.

So, What Now?

With Aaron Judge, Gary Sanchez, and Chad Green all set to become free agents in 2023, their window of opportunity is quickly closing. They should not waste any time in trying to change their culture, or they need to get rid of these guys before they have to pay them. Plenty of teams would love to utilize the talents of a red-hot Gary Sanchez, but the Yankees front office is too out of touch to comprehend that fact.

The strategy of going out and acquiring talented guys to fix the team’s issues simply is not enough. Right now, there are a lot more problems than what meets the eye. First, they need to fire their incompetent manager. Next, they need to figure out what the hell is wrong with Gleyber Torres, who is batting .079 in his last 11 games. Lastly, they need to pray that Gerrit Cole is good without sticky stuff. If he is not who they thought he was, his signing could go down as one of the worst in MLB history. These are only a few things that need fixing, but could prove to help them in the short term.

Warranted Criticism

The last thing I want to say is this: Yankee fans are completely within their right to be demanding change right now. They are watching a team with plenty of talent continue to implode year after year. This is the New York Yankees. They have the most spoiled fanbase in the world, but the fans are spoiled for a reason. They expect and demand success, and when it fails to materialize, they understandably become outraged.

The Yankees need to do something about all of this quickly, or they will have fully wasted five years where they had enough talent to win it all. With their lack of farm system and their enormous contracts, they could have just royally screwed themselves for seasons to come.
