Iowa’s Brian Ferentz Must Score 25 PPG Or Else He’s Fired

This is a ridiculous storyline. Iowa offensive coordinator Brian Ferentz had his contract amended with the team, with a crazy catch.

Usually, a contract amendment is a run-of-the-mill pay cut or maybe an extension. For Brian Ferentz, his new responsibility is to average 25 points per game, or else he’s fired.

“University of Iowa offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Brian Ferentz has signed an amended contract for the 2023 season, with financial incentives based on Designated Performance Objectives,” the contract says.

“The contract amendments will include a salary of $850,000 effective Feb. 1, 2023. The Designated Performance Objectives for the 2023 season include an average of at least 25 points per game and a minimum of seven wins, including regular season and a possible bowl game.

“If the coach does not meet the Designated Performance Objectives, the agreement will terminate on June 30th, 2024.” the contract says.

So instead of firing their bad offensive coordinator, Iowa decided to put Ferentz’s head on the chopping block. Publically.

What’s even more twisted is that Kirk Ferentz is the head coach of the Iowa Hawkeyes. His son Brian is the offensive coordinator in question! Iowa faced nepotism scandals in the past because of this father-son duo, and this whole situation is very fishy.

In 2022, Iowa’s offense was horrendous. They averaged 17.7 points per game, behind the likes of 4-8 FIU and 2-10 Nevada. They sported 251.6 yards per game, easily last in their conference.

They’ll look to bolster their offense in 2023, partially on the shoulders of Michigan transfer quarterback Cade McNamara.

College football fans across the country will be keeping track of Iowa’s, and in turn, Ferentz’s scoring. I personally find this one of the most intriguing storylines of the offseason.

By the way, 25 points per game isn’t a lot. It would have evened them with the 3-9 Arkansas State Red Wolves.

This is a bizarre one. I can’t wait to keep track all season long.
