Does Kirk Ferentz Have The Balls To Fire His Son?

What’s more important to Kirk Ferentz; football or family? If the answer to that question is the latter, then it’s time for the Iowa Hawkeyes to move on and find their next head coach. That may seem harsh to you but I promise by the end of this post you will understand. Does Ferentz have the balls to fire his son? That should be the million dollar question around the Iowa football program.

Even the most casual college football fan knows the Iowa offense is terrible. You can suggest that’s just Big 10 football, and maybe you’re right. However, I’d argue there is a much bigger problem going on within the Iowa football program. Ferentz is refusing to fire his son who has established that he can’t coach.

Brian Ferentz is the offensive coordinator for Iowa. If you haven’t figured it out by now, he is Kirk’s son. Brian has been with the program since 2012 after first being hired to coach the offensive line. Brian has been Iowa’s offensive coordinator since 2017. An offense that has done nothing except tank.

The entire Iowa program faced a serious nepotism scandal because Kirk essentially hired his son without interviewing any other candidates. Then promoted his son without interviewing any other candidates. Brian had the last name Ferentz so he got the job. It would be one thing if Brian was good at his job. He’s not.

I’m not going to sit here and draw up plays from the Iowa playbook. What I can do is bring data to the table. The eyeball test tells you this Iowa offense stinks. The numbers only further prove that point.

Fun fact! Did you know the Iowa offense this year had a seven to seven touchdown to interception ratio in 2022. That’s not just one quarterback. That was the entire offense over the course of a 13 game season. They also averaged 2.9 yards per carry on the ground too so it’s not like they ran the football successfully either. It’s easily the most inept offense in the country. If you can’t get the offense right, why are you employed? Is Brian Ferentz really the most capable person for the job? I think we all know the answer to that.

Cade McNamara will not change anything after coming to the Hawkeyes via the portal. It’s a coaching issue. Nothing more. Nothing less.

The longer Brian Ferentz stays in power, the uglier this offense becomes. It’s starting to reflect in recruiting battles too. Iowa has a long history of developing NFL caliber offensive linemen. This program is heading in the toilet and recruits know it. Kadyn Proctor from Iowa City flipped to Alabama because he felt like he was “settling”. Doesn’t that tell you almost everything you need to know?

At some point, somebody has to say something. Kirk Ferentz either needs to fire his son or the program needs to fire him. We’re at the point of no return.
