Breaking: Joe Burrow Out For The Season With Torn Ligament

Joe Burrow is out for the rest of the season after suffering a torn ligament in his right hand Thursday night against the Baltimore Ravens, Ian Rapoport reported Friday.

He had an acute injury. Likely on the play before his last one,” head coach Zac Taylor said in his press conference Friday. “He tore a ligament in his wrist that will likely require surgery and have him miss the rest of the season.

Jadeveon Clowney hit Burrow late a few minutes before halftime, causing the injury when Burrow landed on his hand. Shortly after, he threw a touchdown pass to Joe Mixon in the redzone and immediately winced after releasing the ball.

After visiting the tent, the ex-LSU star attempted warm-up throws but struggled due to difficulty gripping the ball. He came back out in uniform after halftime but didn’t take a single snap.

Bengals In Trouble?

Pregame footage of Burrow arriving at the stadium appeared to show the quarterback’s right hand in some sort of brace. The Bengals also a posted since-deleted video of Burrow getting off the team plane Wednesday with a brace on Burrow’s right wrist.

The Bengals didn’t place Burrow on the injury report at all this week, a huge no-no if he was truly injured before Thursday’s game. ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported Friday that the NFL is investigating why they didn’t do so.

It’s very likely that the brace didn’t have anything to do with why Burrow couldn’t come back in to the game, and the Bengals probably won’t face any discipline.

Burrow was a full participant in practice all week, and never showed any indication that anything was wrong with his wrist or hand. Coach Taylor also emphasized that Burrow looked fine in warmups.

Backup QB Jake Browning, who came into the game after halftime, held his own against a stout Ravens defense. He went 8-14 for 68 yards and touchdown and will be the starter for the rest of the year. A.J. McCarron, who played for the Bengals from 2015-2017, is back on the team and will backup Browning.

This is the second season ending injury in four years for Burrow, who suffered a torn ACL his rookie year against Washington.

If he was a normal human being, you’d worry about it. He’s not,” coach Taylor said about Burrow. “He’s wired differently. That’s why he has achieved all of the things he has. He’s built differently to overcome setbacks.”

Burrow’s return from the ACL injury saw him lead Cincinnati to their first Super Bowl appearance since 1988.
