Howard Beck Signs With The Ringer

The Ringer is beefing up their NBA coverage prior to the start of the season. After losing NFL writer Kevin Clark to Omaha Productions and ESPN earlier this month, The Ringer has made a splash with the hiring of Howard Beck. For the record, I’m not sure the loss of Clark is a big deal, but that’s a side note for another day.

Beck announced the news on Twitter today that he was joining The Ringer.

Beck, 55, has been around the block. Beck made stops with the New York Times, Bleacher Report and then SI. He also covered the Lakers and Knicks for local sports sections early in his writing career. Beck also started a Substack but that appears to be out the window now. I have no idea why Beck thought starting a Substack was a good idea, but he’s finally found a home that’s not behind a paywall now.

In terms of fit, this appears to be a good one for Beck. Bill Simmons made his mark being a long form writer a long time ago. Those are the guys that he usually covets for The Ringer. That’s exactly what Beck does. His columns aren’t exactly short. Spotify also owns The Ringer and Beck could restart his podcast career under their umbrella.

Let’s hear from you in the comments section. Was this a good move for Beck? Are you more eager to consume his NBA content now that he is part of The Ringer?
