How Will Dillon Gabriel Fare With Oregon?
Dillon Gabriel entered the transfer portal and has since landed with Oregon. Not to bury the lede but it’s hard not to view this as a wise choice for Gabriel to continue his collegiate playing career.
Gabriel, 23 at the end of the month, played well for Oklahoma last year. The Hawaii native posted a 30 to six TD to INT ratio and completed 69.3% of his throws. It’s just also obvious that he doesn’t have the ceiling of Jackson Arnold and Oklahoma needed to get the young stud on the field. If Gabriel wasn’t going to test the NFL waters, the portal was really his only option.
Based on the way Bo Nix progressed, it’s hard not to love this landing spot. Nix completed 61% of his throws as a junior for Auburn. That number spiked to 77% this past year at Oregon. Nix clearly improved with the Ducks and got way better as a pure passer. If Oregon can help Gabriel out in a similar way, this move makes a ton of sense. Nix, of course, has to enter the NFL Draft this year. Gabriel has one more year at his disposal.
Being part of what Dan Lanning is building isn’t a terrible decision. Gabriel can’t change the fact that he’s 5-foot-11 with an okay arm. What he can do is go ball out again. Something I expect him to do. Something that should also help his NFL Draft stock. Did you see him play Texas this year? Gabriel has talent and should shine at Oregon.
