How Jeff Bezos can return the Chargers to San Diego

The Los Angeles Chargers may now be in sight for Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos. A rift in the Spanos family has led Dea Spanos Berberian, sister of controlling owner Dean Spanos, to file a petition to force the sale of the franchise.

Spanos Berberian is arguing that a debt exceeding $300 million is threatening her family’s legacy. Dean Spanos purchased the franchise in 1984 for $72 million dollars. Today, the Chargers are worth an estimated $2.2 billion.

Whether or not this drama materializes into a sale is uncertain. If it does, however, Jeff Bezos would be in a prime (get it?) position to make the purchase. The billionaire CEO was recently listed as a suitor for the Washington Football Team.

A Jeff Bezos purchase could return the Chargers to San Diego. It is no secret that this is the ‘other team’ that currently plays in Los Angeles. However, the on-field product is improving. The team found a franchise QB in Justin Herbert. After replacing Anthony Lynn, the 2021 season could be promising.

On the other hand, the Rams will always be Los Angeles’ football team. Bezos would recognize this. The prospect of building in a city like San Diego would far outweigh the cost of being the second team in LA.

Dean Spanos is cheap. Jeff Bezos can wipe his behind with the money it would cost him to purchase the franchise. He would supply the funds that Spanos could not get the city of San Diego to pay in 2015.

The Chargers may be up for sale. Could Amazon Stadium arrive in San Diego? The possibility has never been more real.
