Devin Singletary signs with Texans
The Texans keep their busy day of the free agency going as they have agreed to terms on running back Devin Singletary for a one-year deal worth up to $3.75 million, ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter was among the first to report on the news. This came less than an hour after they announced they will be signing Dalton Schultz on a one-year deal as well.
The former Bills running back will likely serve as a backup to Dameon Pierce after his strong rookie season. But Singletary himself is no slouch and should serve as a very formidable backup. He has tallied over 1,000 yards from scrimmage in each of the last two seasons, to go along with 4.6 yards per carry in that same time frame.
But aside from his rushing ability, Devin Singletary has proven to be a versatile weapon as a receiver in the backfield, racking up 40 and 38 receptions over the last two seasons, respectively. This should complement Pierce rather well since he doesn’t offer much as a receiving back.
While this is hardly a move that fixes the current state of the Texans, he is a great veteran presence who has proven his worth in the league time and time again. And he is likely due for a regression in stats as a result of playing in a Bills offense that has surely inflated his stats. But he will still be a guy who you know will run hard and can use his receiving skills to get you out of tough situations.
The Texans are almost certainly going to have a new QB after this draft. And giving whoever that player may be a solid running game behind them is never a bad idea. I really do like this duo of Dameon Pierce and Devin Singletary and think they can be very effective, if used properly.
